Is the dating scene REALLY this BAD that one must resort to competing on a 'reality television show' in order to find that 'perfect match'?Apparently so, according to ABC's "THE BACHELOR", an embarrassing and degrading 'entertainment' show where 15 single women are courted by 'Alex', a 31 year-old handsome, professional successful bachelor who must decide which lady (if at all) he prefers to be his wedded bride.While FOX already conquered the smutty side of this premise with the exploitative and ground-breaking "WHO WANTS TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE" which ended in complete disaster (it was found out later that the groom had a violent domestic history - the wife filed for an annulment less than a few days later after the special aired on television), "THE BACHELOR" is a more mature approach to basically the same deal. In this case, Alex is not a millionaire, but he is professionally secure.In reality, with looks combined, Alex would make the perfect catch for a single woman. As it yet goes to show that television still cannot grasp the meaning of the word 'reality', the fifteen women chosen to compete in this adventure are all young attractive in-shape ladies. If this was in fact a 'reality' show, all the women would be of different body shapes and sizes, ages and some may even be considered unattractive to general society. All the women featured in "THE BACHELOR" are between the ages of 20-30 and appear to be as man-hungry as those who would attend a male strip-joint.I find it very hard to believe that all these women have trouble finding a reasonable date in 'the real world' that they had to resort to appearing on this television show in hopes of match-making with Mr. Alex. In this day and age, if life appears to be this terrible and trite for these women, "THE BACHELOR" really makes my life seem hopeless and meaningless."THE BACHELOR" is a show one can do without watching. It can be considered a guilty pleasure, but I find this kind of 'reality' rather sickening.Whoever Alex decides to marry, I hope we get to see the spin-off, "THE DIVORCE". Now that would be true reality.

Of course it's trashy, pathetic, and sad...that is why it's entertaining!

And yes, the show is awful and the women always succeed in making themselves look like low-class high school girls by the end of the season premier. But hey, at least when you watch it, you can be thankful that you don't have to be there in the middle of it. No matter how bad your life seems, it could always be worse!You know the story: 25 bimbettes vie for the love of one man. The bachelor, suave and well-to-do, dates the girls (in groups and sometimes one-on-one), and at the end of every episode he eliminates some of them. It's hilarious how serious these girls get within the first few episodes. When they're not gushing about the bachelor to the camera privately or talking about how much they want to become Mrs. <fill in the blank with bachelor's name>, they're trying to find ways to stab each other in the back and sling mud.I'll admit I've watched all three seasons. Yes, I've been insulted and told I have no life before, but don't I have the right to watch what I want in evening after I've worked a hard day at work and already put the kids to bed? That's why this is America, folks. The women on this show are hilarious sometimes, and I find myself often wondering if any of them are truly over the age of 16. They behave like little children, 99% of them talk like valley girls, and they all look the same...all beauty, no brains. As for the bachelor himself, the three men who have had the honor so far to pick their "bride" from among these ladies are also pretty generic...tall, dark, handsome, elegant, well-off (one of them we know for a fact is a millionaire), and making out as much as possible with all the ladies before the time comes, near the end of the series, that a ring must be purchased and an engagement proposed. So far the series is 3 for 3 in accepted proposals, but only 1 for 3 when it comes to relationships after the end of the series. I'm not surprised.All in all, like pretty much all reality shows, this one is awful...so awful it's good and bringing in millions of ratings each season. The executives at ABC are laughing all the way to the bank.

Lowe, 28, is a 6'3" Texan who is still built like the champion linebacker he was at Kansas State. Along with his boy-next-door good looks, his ripped body makes him one of the sexiest bachelors they have ever featured. And he knows it too.He seems happy that the show never misses an opportunity to showcase his sculpted muscles. Whether it's working out shirtless or lounging by the pool, Sean's near-perfect body is always on display. The girls on the show constantly talk about it and some even encourage him to take his shirt off when they're together. Sean has fun with an "aw shucks" attitude, but he knows his body is hot. The show's producers also know they have something America wants to see and they purposely put him in situations where going bare-chested is easy.A case in point is the latest photo shoot date where Sean and the girls posed for the covers of romance novels. With his bare torso shaved smooth and oiled to highlight every ripple, Sean can only smile as one delighted beauty runs her hands over his six-pack abs. Trying to start out slow, as a sexy cowboy, Sean wears a shirt but leaves it unbuttoned. By the end of the shoot, the women competed with each other to see who could rip it open far enough to nuzzle up against his bare skin. While the camera clicked, Sean tried to look nonchalant but casually flexed to make sure each picture showed him off at his best. After the shoot, Sean and the ladies wound up at a pool party, and there he was again in a bathing suit, giving the girls – and the rest of us at home – another chance to see his impressive physique.Sean knows his body makes him a sex object and it looks like he loves having it on display. The show is just beginning and the coming attractions have a lot of beach and pool scenes. Will we get a shot of Mr. Lowe in a speedo? Clearly, Sean wants us to stay tuned and see.

Often imitated and duplicated. The show has the unmitigated gall to call itself a reality series – and people actually repeat it – all the while setting up and knocking down a premise so absurd that is, and could only be, contrived for TV. 25 beautiful women, vie for the attention of 1 guy with a marriage proposal up for grabs at the end. Yeah right, right? Because everybody knows that women don't care enough for men to make fools of themselves for one of them – even for the chance to be on national TV – the bachelors are elevated to superhuman status by the show. All applicants chosen are dream boyfriend-types that are model good looking, rich beyond their initially appeared intelligence (often owners of their own business) and can be frequently found wooing their dates by staring off into space or recycling greeting card clichés about what "love" means to them. Part of the "A-group" in high school these guys are the types that have no trouble getting dates back home. The show isn't about getting them dates or even getting them hitched, it is a self-indulgent parade for them to show off to the rest of the country how they have women falling all over them. It's about nourishing the egos of people who don't exactly need it (while those that do sit home and watch) and not any end resolution – which should be abundantly clear after years of this show resulting in no marriages. The recent multi-million dollar blow-out extravaganza for the snoozefest that was Ryan and Trista's Wedding showed just how desperate ABC is to prove that this concept isn't so fundamentally flawed that it's a waste of everybody's time. The girls get a chance to return to their high school days as well, with supposedly adult women reduced to crying, groveling and the much anticipated catty 'backstabbing' among their peers to win over the guy they just met and also conveniently for the show just fell in love with. Take a drink every time on of them says "I can really see myself with him" and you'll be in AA before the final rose. The whole pageant is more a nasty, pandering popularity contest than a game show. And it is the same thing season after season no matter who they put in the roles. The bottom line is that, sorry, it just isn't really that interesting watching beautiful people meeting each other. What's the challenge there? the achievement? It might all be sad if it was all real. The bachelors and his women are not average people but clearly aspiring models and actresses that can't otherwise get work. ABC pours through their headshots and videos searching for strictly outlined qualities to make an interesting show and – if only – start some real friction in the house so "the claws will come out". That, along with the phrase "the most dramatic rose ceremony ever", have become laughable staples of 'The Bachelor'. It is so dull that it doesn't work even work on a guilty pleasure and so pandering that it is insulting. This should be a living fantasy for men but it's handled with such melodramatic soap opera seriousness as to crush any of the potential ridiculous fun. I don't know why a woman would even watch it other than as a chance to gossip about people without it doing any damage. How should I put this gently? The show inadvertently creates a paradox for itself. The Bachelor is an open-palmed slap in the face to the institute of marriage and the romanticized notion that people meet someone they are supposed to be with in a mystical magical way. As I said, I think the show is designed and that these clearly aren't regular people, but the bigger and more dangerous question is if the emotions that come forth from them are real. Think about it. It's common for people to write both the men and the women off as acting or sad, pathetic basket cases. That's the easy way out. But, how are their emotions any less legitimate or real than that of people who didn't meet on TV, but met in real life in the more typically romanticized way? The show proves that it can be contrived and manipulated and people will believe it just the same. It expedites the process with group dates, contests and fantasy suites but what they go through is still pretty much the series of events that line up and lead anyone to find anyone. Whose being manipulated here? If we put the love lives of most people married or dating the 'natural way' it would look just as sad and pathetic. It's a question a lot of people don't want to think about – particularly those responsible for this show. If this show brings down the romanticism surrounding love and dating than there goes it's primary audience. The only person that comes out of this smelling, well, like a rose is host Chris Harrison. He's a likable personality and has got a pretty good gig, stepping into the middle of the drama and calmly laying out the guidelines. Harrison's biggest moment in the sun aside from announcing the "final rose this evening" is in the post-show interview specials. He's not bad. Then again, it's probably effortless to look that cool given every thing else that's around him. * / 5

Each major network has a reality TV juggernaut which, despite hit and miss ratings, can't be destroyed. CBS has three: "Survivor", "Big Brother" and "The Amazing Race". NBC has "The Apprentice". ABC has "The Bachelor/ette". Although nobody will consider ABC's show "Masterpiece Theater" material, it still boasts high entertainment.This, of course, is the only one of the bunch not involving a fat check or Trump job at the end of it. Instead, it's the Romance Card. 25 or more successful career women who want to "settle down" (biological clock ticking away) all vie for an eligible bachelor "of breeding". Ridiculous rose ceremonies aside, there's always high drama and hyper-active emotions (fueled by wine on occasion), catfights galore and some of the most colorful femme fatale in reality TV (like Trish in Jesse Palmer's season). Make whatever opinion you like, you can't say this show is boring: Jason's surprise "After The Rose" finale didn't top the Nielsen ratings for nothing.Some bachelors are more telegenic than others. Generally speaking, seasons are liked or disliked according to the star. Andrew Firestone was the most-liked, followed by Byron (one of two still with his Final 1, though not officially married). Others like Lorenzo and Dr. Travis did much better as salesmen and TV show hosts than as the focal center of a TV harem. (Astrological trivia: more Bachelors are Cancers than any other sign... which explains the heavy emphasis on "meeting the parents" in both the "hometown dates" and finale.) Host Chris Harrison is always there tapping the wine glass and announcing the rose ceremonies (the only boring part of the show). Fortunately, he isn't a robotic host. His interviews with both the lead and the competing ladies are quite heart-felt. His popularity, no doubt, influenced the more touchy-feely tribal councils that Jeff Probst has presided in more recent seasons of "Survivor".I, for one, prefer "The Bachelorette"... I guess because it hasn't lost its novelty value. So far, all of these were initially with "The Bachelor". (Apparently, Fleiss & Co. has been slow seeking an "unknown" woman, just as they've been slow to cast a non-Caucasian.) Their experience as part of a group of 25 gives them a better understanding of what their male suitors are going through when the tables turn.

This show stars a hunk of a man that is loaded with money, good looks, charm and confidence and about two dozen women who are all dying for his affection, love, attention and sperm. Yes, sperm. These women want The Bachelor to be the father of their future children. Dare to dream.This show is good for a guilty pleasure for viewers, but should not be taken seriously. No show-winner yet has been able to make the relationship work and head into marriage without breaking up within months or weeks of the finale. This show format is NOT a good way to find love. I mean, come on, how can you fall in love with someone who is basically "cheating" on you on national television, kissing other women, dating other women, feeling up other women, sharing dreams and futures with other women, not knowing whether he is being true to you or to them.The relationships between the girls in the house is purely superficial and fake. No one cares about the other women or hates to see them go. All they want is that rose so they can stay on TV a bit longer and garner their 15 minutes of fame. Because once the show is over, no one remembers who was on the show or even who won.It's fun to watch because it's a reality competition based show, but in the end, we don't really care if they end up married or in love. We want to see who wins, but don't try to tell us they've found their soul mate because everyone on the show is a 'ho. The host of the show is pimping out the women to the bachelor and everyone has to put their best show on to get that rose that means absolutely nothing in real life.All of the roses die before the finale even airs. But this show is great for filling a guilty pleasure as a viewer. I don't watch the show for love, but for pure entertainment and drama, which the story editors do a good job on this show to keep the interests high, drama deep and entertainment strong. But don't tell me the purpose of this show is to find true love. The formula of the show goes against all the odds of finding true love.
